Werfhuisie on the Du Bois Farm

Farmstay on a working organic vegetable and fynbos farm

Werfhuisie is in the middle of the Du Bois (organic vegetable and fynbos) working, farmyard. This is where we live, move, and have our being together with our Great Dane dog, the birds, and our chickens - the rooster loves announcing the beginning of each new day. Here the air is clean, the water in the taps is fresh from the spring in the fynbos mountain. The house is not fully self-catering, which is why we have a menu for meals from our farm kitchen, made with our farm ingredients.

The area around the Du Bois farm is safe and quiet for cycling, hiking and strolls through the fynbos.

This is a working farm and there is a good chance that you will meet the people working on the farm during working hours, and sometimes you will hear them working joyfully together. Our farm, Du Bois, is situated in the Overberg in the mountains between Stanford and Elim. We’ve been farming in this area for the past 20 odd years. We value the clean air that comes from the ocean in the East and West. Gravitation brings the freshwater for our gardens from springs higher up in the mountains – we don’t own a pump! This suits our ideal of organic, sustainable farming. We grow all our vegetable soil focused; not plant-focused. Meaning, we sustain and feed the soil as well as the organisms that live in it. Good soil takes care of the plants.

  •   Karien and her family are warm and considerate hosts, who went the extra mile to fetch us when we arrived in the dark and when we needed extra fuel to make it home. The space is wonderfully warm and simple, with all the necessary amenities for both warm and cold weather, and there are beautiful walks in various natural spaces all around the farm and surrounds.
